GWSHOF Chairman Emeritus Bill Dooley says, "Our purpose is to honor those persons who by their excellence in the world of sport has brought recognition and esteem to themselves and the Greater Wilmington Area."
We hope to promote excellence in competitive athletics and to educate the public on the importance of honorable competition.
Honorees will be selected from a long list of athletes, coaches, administrators, trainers, doctors, members of the media and any other person that has made a significant impact on the caliber of athletics in the Greater Wilmington area.
Dooley, who coached at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest University is one of the winningest football coaches in Atlantic Coast Conference history. A resident of Wilmington, Dooley says, "One of the main objectives of the GWSHOF is to create public awareness of the areas' rich sports history and heritage."
Cape Fear Museum of History and Science will house the pictures, plaques of recognition, donated signed sports memorabilia, and other sports-related artifacts. Also the Museum will feature changing exhibits that honor the inductees and increase public awareness about these sports legends and their achievements. A proposed Museum expansion identifies a permanent exhibit location for a Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame Cafe.
